MOUNTING TV's to a Wall Mounting a plasma TV or LCD TV is possible on most walls. In order to make the correct and informed choice on wall mounting your plasma LCD TV, it is important to know your walls and how your dwelling has been contructed. The common types of wall construction are brick and brick veneer, stud wall with gyprock. Apartments can be brick, steel frame with gyprock on internal walls or concrete. The type of wall construction can determine whether or not you mount the TV to the wall. One reason not to hang the TV on the wall is that it may be impossible or too expensive to conceal the cables or the wall may not be strong enough to carry the weight. Another factor could be that there are not enough power outlets or the antenna socket needs to be moved. Most if not all plasmas and LCD's require the purchase of a wall mount bracket, or it may be supplied with the TV instead of a stand. There are many brands and types such as, articulated brackets which allow you to move the tv out from the wall so the viewer can position the tv to suit. The most common type of wallmount bracket is a flat mounting bracket and the tv is usually mounted to the centre of the wall. It is important to realise that a plasma tv, lcd tv or any other display device should not be positioned too high on the wall. Too high can mean neck strain in the extreme or just plain uncomfortable viewing. The best rule of thumb (and this goes for choosing the size of the tv ) is to have your couch positioned at least three to four times the width of the screen back from the plasma tv itself.
Once your plasma tv or lcd tv is wall mounted you should also think about how you are going to connect it all up.
Things to consider are:
Types of wall mounting brackets. At MAXTV we can source and supply Power: get yourself a surge protected power board if you don't have enough power outlets to accomodate your equipment. This is a form of cheap insurance to protect the well being of all your expensive av equipment.
- Antenna outlet
- Source devices like your dvd player, digital set top box, cable tv, av reciever etc.
- If you intend on connecting all your source devics directly to the TV then you will need a lot of cables, at least 3m in length to reach your boxes.
- A better way to do this is to purchase (or if you already own one) an av receiver and connect all your sources to that, then you will only have to run one video source cable, power and antenna to the plasma or lcd tv. You would then use the av reciever to do the switching between video sources.
- You can also have the option of hiding all your av equipment in another part of the room and run a single AV cable such as a 10m HDMI cable, provided your reciever has HDMI switching and is able to upscale any lower ranking video sources like VCR's that you may want to keep.
In summary, when considering wall mounting your plasma tv, lcd tv or any other display device make sure you know the following:
- Type of wall construction the TV is to be mounted on
- wall cavities for cable concealment
- location of the antenna
- location of power point
- veiwing distance from the screen
- size and weight of the TV
- Plumbing
- video cables and lengths
- where you will place your source devices
- entertainment furniture
- Surge protection
It is important to note that if a fault developes while your plasma tv or lcd tv is on the wall, that most warranty repair services require that you return the plasma or lcd back onto it's stand. In other words keep the stand. WALL MOUNTING TO A FIREPLACE When considering if you should or shouldn't install your television above the fireplace you need to consider several aspects of the installation. Here is a step buy step guide to help you with you answer the question.. "should I install a flat panel LCD TV or plasma television above the fireplace?" or "is it safe to install a flat panel Plasma TV or LCD TV above my fireplace?" 1.) Ask yourself the question do you ever use or are planning the use the fireplace ever again? If your answer is Yes to that question then proceed in this article to learn if you can install your television above the fireplace. If you answered No then well yes you can install any LCD or Plasma Television above your fireplace as long as the wall can support the mount and weight of the television. 2.) Tape a thermometer above the fireplace on the mantel where you are going to install the television. Get the fire going full force. If it doesn't get above your TV manufactures recommended heat level then your good to go that's usually 90F degrees. If you don't have a thermometer then get the fireplace blazing hot and touch the wall above the fireplace if it warm to the touch your okay, if its hot to the touch then you probably can't install the television. 3.) One other consideration other than heat when mounting your LCD TV or Plasma TV above the fireplace is the mantel wall. You need know if it's a brick facade or if its actually part of the chimney. If its part of the chimney if you did the heat test it should have been hot. Most houses built from the late 70's on have a facade. If the fireplace has a brick facade then the heat is put into a small smoke stack that is insulated from producing heat to the surrounding walls. This protects your paint from chipping and your dry wall from deteriorating. 4.) If you not sure call on a professional to determine if you can hang your television above the fireplace. The answer is Yes most of the time. MAXTV would never install a plasma or LCD TV above the fireplace if we determine its unsafe. If MAXTV can't hang it above your fireplace safely no one can. 5.) Have a backup plan. 98% of the time we have absolutely no problem installing the TV above the fireplace. If it is determined not safe to install the flat panel LCD TV or Plasma television above the fireplace we will still install it anywhere else in the house you want it.
