OLED (Organic light emitting diode) Technology is set to revolutionise the world with it's own range of possibilities.

Possibilities like:

• Super thin TV's
• Lighting. Whole walls and ceilings can become lights
• Super low power consumption! Light-emitting OLED technology eliminates the need for a backlight and achieves a high level of energy efficiency while consuming up to 40 percent less power than conventional 20-inch LCD panels.
• Greener production methods/Organic. Carbon is the basis of all organic matter and it is also the organic material in which OLED is comprised. Examples of carbon-based substances include sugar, wood and the majority of plastics.

We are now beginning to see OLED displays coming out now. Such as the 11inch Sony which has had its praises sung for the past year or so. Such as an unrivaled picture quality. Boasting a 960 x 540 native resolution, the  Sony XL1 OLED TV yields the same pixel density as a 40" (measured diagonally) 1080p LCD TV. 

ONLY 960 x 540 native resolution I hear you say!  Well, Resolution is not the important factor in how good a picture looks it's Contrast ratio! the difference between Black and white is what gives you the depth of colour.  The Sony OLED Possesses the ability to completely turn off an organic pixel, the OLED TV breaks new ground with a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio that produces deep blacks in astounding dark scene detail.

There are also OLED displays coming out in mobile phone technology right at this very moment . The only thing holding back OLED at the moment is the hefty price tag , size and the question beging to be answered is how long will it last. Most of the leading brands are boasting about releasing a large more maintream size OLED TV such as a 40" maybe as early as next year, who knows. As usual it's up to those that can afford the pointy edge of technology to help bring down the price so the rest of us canafford one.
